For performance and scalability reasons it was rejected. I agree with the argument that smaller shops would still benefit from such an option so we may build the infrastructure at some point to support that scenario. For the time being I will mark this as "not taken" and revisit it when we have the means to build something like that.
While I agree that using this as a monitoring tool is not ideal or intentional, I think the availability of selecting a connection and getting some sort of feedback that it is alive is very useful.

Maybe this is an acceptable workaround for you.
Maybe a new icon showing if a machine is up or down before connecting is useful, at least it will for me.
For example, red circle if the machine is down or green if its alive.
