This would drastically improve the user experience. I would suggest an indicator could appear in the bottom status bar while saving for feedback, but allow being able to interact with the application in the meantime.
I can't even find the auto-save setting. I swear I've used it before though.
Either way, would like to see a background auto-save feature implemented.

The auto-save blocks the program from being used during save. At first, the program is simply blocked out and beeps if you try to do anything. Next, a modal window appears and gets in the way.
Auto-save is good, but this needs to be a background task so that you can change more than one item in sequence, or change an item and then connect, without the auto-save getting in the way.
